SelfHacked has the strictest sourcing guidelines in the health industry and we almost exclusively link to medically peer-reviewed studies, usually on PubMed. We believe that the most accurate information is found directly in the scientific source.

We are dedicated to providing the most scientifically valid, unbiased, and comprehensive information on any given topic.

Our team comprises of trained MDs, PhDs, pharmacists, qualified scientists, and certified health and wellness specialists.

Our science team goes through the strictest vetting process in the health industry and we often reject applicants who have written articles for many of the largest health websites that are deemed trustworthy. Our science team must pass long technical science tests, difficult logical reasoning and reading comprehension tests. They are continually monitored by our internal peer-review process and if we see anyone making material science errors, we don't let them write for us again.

Our goal is to not have a single piece of inaccurate information on this website. If you feel that any of our content is inaccurate, out-of-date, or otherwise questionable, please leave a comment or contact us at [email protected]

Note that each number in parentheses [1, 2, 3, etc.] is a clickable link to peer-reviewed scientific studies. A plus sign next to the number “[1+, 2+, etc...]” means that the information is found within the full scientific study rather than the abstract.

If you struggle with fatigue, brain fog, or other inflammatory health problems, it doesn’t matter how many supplements or hacks you use if you can’t fix your sleep.

50% of SelfHacked Clients and from our reader survey suffer from insomnia or poor sleep quality. We find that insomnia has an 80% correlation with brain fog, anxiety, and depression.

Why You Need to Optimize Your Sleep and How to Overcome Insomnia

50% of SelfHacked Clients and from our reader survey suffer from insomnia or poor sleep quality. We find that insomnia has an 80% correlation with brain fog, anxiety, and depression.

Insomnia and poor sleep quality can cause or worsen:

  • Brain fog or cognitive dysfunction [1, 2]
  • ADHD [3]
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Irritable Bowel Diseases (IBD) [4]
  • Autoimmune diseases [5]
  • Weight gain [6] and difficult weight loss [7]
  • Insulin resistance [8]
  • Allergies [9]
  • Eczema (10, 9, 11)
  • Asthma [12]
  • Frequent infections [13, 14]
  • Poor wound healing [15]
  • Metabolic syndrome and diabetes [16, 17]
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease [18]
  • High blood pressure [18]
  • Heart disease [17, 19]
  • Weight loss in thin people (because poor circadian rhythm reduces insulin) [20, 21]
  • Loss of muscle mass [7]
  • Thyroid problems [22]
  • Anxiety and depression [23]
  • PTSD (can cause insomnia, but those who don’t sleep well are also more predisposed to PTSD) [23]
  • Acne [24]
  • Stomach ulcer [25, 26]
  • Intestinal permeability (leaky gut) [27]
  • Other digestive problems [4]
  • Infertility and pregnancy loss [28]

This is what happens to your hormones when you don’t sleep well:

Poor sleep not only increases all-cause mortality but also increases inflammation. This can worsen pretty much any inflammatory health issue. Getting restorative sleep is essential to fixing sleep problems.

If you are reading this post, you probably are aware of the harmful effects of sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality.

Ironically, your desire and anxiety about fixing all of this can be making it worse.

Many people deal with their insomnia the wrong way, which could be:

  • staying in bed
  • getting up, turning the lights on, and finding something to read on the internet
  • taking long naps in the afternoon
  • crashing for 14 hours on the weekend
  • avoiding sleep altogether

These things either make your anxiety about insomnia much worse or completely mess up your circadian rhythm altogether.

In the long term, trying to cope with your insomnia could stress you out and make everything worse.

Eventually, you become a zombie with all your health problems worsening over time, despite the cleanest diet and thousands of dollars’ worth of supplements.

How I overcame my insomnia

I had the worst sleep from adolescence until I was 26. Not only did it take me hours to fall asleep, but I would wake up 2 – 3 times a night to pee or for no reasons at all.

Some nights I remember going to bed at 12 AM or so and I’d stay up until 6 or 7 AM.

In the morning, I would wake up feeling like a ton of bricks hit me. Not surprisingly, I would be tired all day. My brain wasn’t working and I dealt with a lot of inflammatory health issues.

And even in the rare circumstance where I fell asleep normally and stayed asleep all night, I would wake up feeling extremely tired and unrefreshed.

Sleeping well isn’t something that comes easy to me, but over the years I’ve been able to biohack my insomnia. Now, I don’t need any supplements to knock myself out, nor do I need any stimulants to get going during the day.

And I’m not the only one. I’ve helped over 1000 clients with their health issues, and over 85% of them had insomnia. I’ve found that as long as they followed the SelfHacked protocol, their sleep would improve immensely.

I still get emails and blog comments every single day from people who suffer from inflammatory health issues and can’t sleep. I know that the key to resolving their health is to fix their sleep, which is why I’m putting all the science and actionable info into Biohacking Insomnia.

As long as I follow the guidelines laid out in the book, I go to sleep fast, stay asleep, and wake up with my brain buzzing, happy and ready to kick some ass.

The most important thing is that my brain works 100%, so I can continue to write great posts on SelfHacked and work on SelfDecode, which are most important to me.

Not only was I able to fix my difficult insomnia, but I have also helped over 1,000 clients with complex health issues, over 80% of which have insomnia.

Here’s what my clients have to say about this:

“I’ve suffered from severe insomnia for years and it harmed my ability to function during the day. One night, lying restlessly in bed, I thought someone in the world must know how to fix this. After some Googling, I found Joe’s site. Joe helped me to resolve my chronic insomnia after years of trying exercise, restricted diets, affirmations, Lumosity, and a homeopath. The secret was a balanced combination of nutrients, lifestyle changes, and meditation that Joseph Cohen knew because he had been down the same road. He knows what works and what doesn’t. If my best friend was suffering from insomnia, chronic fatigue, or brain fog I would recommend Joseph Cohen.”

SH, Management consultant

I’ve been working with Joe over the past year regarding various issues I was having. Working at a demanding job in finance, I needed to be able to perform my best and I felt that I just wasn’t. As I implemented his suggestions, I started to see a lot benefits in how my body functions as well as my cognitive process. I was having issues with sugar cravings, sleep, gut, brain fog, anxiety and energy levels. I had already been eating as healthy as I possibly knew and had tried to get help from doctors and naturopaths, without success. After implementing Joe’s suggestions, I’ve notice my emotional state doesn’t fluctuate as much. My sleep quality and regularity has improved substantially. Cravings for sugar have ceased. Based on work or social things, there are days I abandon the suggestions, and when I start feeling like crap, I return to them rather quickly. The world of diets, nutrition, and health can be overwhelming. I’m grateful to have stumbled across Joe’s blog and consulted with him. It’s had a big impact on my lifestyle and choices. Thanks Joe. Keep it up!

“Joe Cohen of Selfhacked.com is one of the brightest minds in natural healing today. His level of scientific research, personal experimentation with supplements and clinical experience with clients is profound. I have consulted with more well-known nutritionally-oriented M.D.’s & naturopaths, but Joe’s coaching got me far better results. Working with Joe was the literally the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. His website & health coaching guided me up to an astonishing level of relief from chronic fatigue, anxiety, inflammation, and sleep issues that had stumped other experts and stole my life away from me. The diet and lifestyle changes Joe suggested took effort and adjustment for me to comply with 100%, but it was well worth it: I feel like a new man! I got such tremendous value from working with Joe that it would have been a bargain at 10 times his hourly rate.”

-Brett Andrew

“No need for naps anymore. Before I could barely keep my eyes open in the afternoon. I now am awake the entire day w/o feeling drowsy.”

My sleep quality has improved tremendously. I never wake up during the night anymore.

“I am so happy with my consultation with Joseph. For the past 20 years I have been to a number of practitioners; naturopaths, ayurvedic, wellness, and none of them have the patience and thoroughness I found in my consult with Joseph. I also have spent a number of years reading about vitamins, herbs and healthy eating in order to address my issues so I knew when I read his website that he had done lots of serious work. During my first consult we discussed my background and goals then I got not only a regime but an excellent explanation of what each supplement was for and how they work together energetically. Joseph is very generous with his knowledge and time. He answered all my questions and am very satisfied with the session.” Results: “I’m sleeping much better now, my digestion is better, I have less cravings and more energy.”

-Angela, Special ed teacher

“Within 5 days of implementing Joe’s advice, my body was no longer bloated. Somehow my double chin disappeared and people started commenting on how much younger I looked. After a few weeks following his supplement advice, my energy levels where much more stable and I no longer experienced fatigue after meals. I am 35 years old and have been suffering from brain fog and a circadian rhythm disorder since childhood. I have seen many doctors, naturopaths and have spent thousands of dollars on various supplements over the years. After one consultation with Joe, I have learned more about how the body responds to inflammation then I have learned in the past ten years. Before anyone buys another supplement based on something they read on a message forum I urge them to speak to Joe first. His consultation will save lots of money and effort in finding relief.”

-Josh, Lawyer

“Since consulting with Joe my health problems have improved dramatically. I was fatigued, depressed and had insomnia. He was articulate in describing what he thought the core issues were and formulated a targeted protocol that has worked better than I expected. I’m sleeping better and my mood and energy levels are up. It took some follow ups and some tweaking, but it was well worth it in the end”

-Jacob, Lawyer

“I’ve been a client of Joe’s for a while. Reading his blog and working with him personally has helped me find incredible changes in my health and state of mind. Like a lot of us that read this blog, we are the people that will experiment with anything to see if it helps us feel a little better in our bodies. Since working with Joe, my sleep, brain fog, sugar cravings, and stomach issues have all improved dramatically. I function so much better. I’m able to actually do and enjoy all the stuff I want to spend time on because I have the energy and focus to do so. The value that this man provides for the cost of service is absolutely incredible. I’ll be a client of his for as long as he keeps this up.”
