Meet Joe

Joe is the founder and CEO of SelfHacked, SelfDecode, and LabTestAnalyzer.

Joe Cohen won the genetic lottery of bad genes and grew up with a bad diet and suboptimal education. As a result, he suffered from brain fog, fatigue, digestive problems, insomnia and many other health issues that were inadequately addressed by conventional medicine.

At the age of 25, his health issues were so bad that he flunked out of his classes and couldn’t hold down a job. Desperate, Joe decided to embark on a journey of self-experimentation to improve his health - something that has since become known as "biohacking".

He started by reading blogs and realized that other people’s advice didn’t work well for him. Most people were preaching what worked best for them, regardless of empirical evidence and with scientifically incorrect information.

Frustrated, he did his own research, reading scientific literature on PubMed, which gave rise to SelfHacked. Through his research, Joe found several topics that are rarely mentioned in chronic health issues, such as the vagus nerve, the cannabinoid system, the importance of sun exposure (beyond obtaining adequate vitamin D), and Th1, Th2, and Th17 dominance.

Our Process

SelfHacking starts with solid information, such as from peer-reviewed published studies (not from blogs or other experts) that is critically evaluated. This information, along with personal experience, helps guide the self-experimentation or SelfHacking.

Sometimes, information about a practice or substance is not published in peer-reviewed studies.

This can be because it is not an attractive field to do research, or because it would be difficult to design the study. Sometimes, if the mechanism seems plausible and risks of harm aren’t too high, we keep an open mind and look for the science may support how these things benefit our health.

While Joe started off trying to improve his health, SelfHacking could also be used to further optimize health and performance for people who are already healthy.
