Welcome to SelfHacked!

Whether you struggle with a chronic health issue or want to improve different aspects of your health naturally, you’re in the right place.

About Selfhacked

SelfHacked combines thoroughly-researched, scientifically-backed information with personal experimentation, critical thinking, and an open mind.

We want to provide you with the information you need to help you overcome your chronic health issues that aren't addressed by conventional medicine.

SelfHacked is also a citizen science movement. Our articles, books, and software provide the information that you can use to self-experiment based on your goals and physiology. Everyone is different and your goal should be to find out what works best for you.

Meet Joe

Joe is the founder and CEO of SelfHacked, SelfDecode, and LabTestAnalyzer.

Joe Cohen won the genetic lottery of bad genes and grew up with a bad diet and suboptimal education. As a result, he suffered from brain fog, fatigue, digestive problems, insomnia and many other health issues that were inadequately addressed by conventional medicine.

At the age of 25, his health issues were so bad that he flunked out of his classes and couldn’t hold down a job. Desperate, Joe decided to embark on a journey of self-experimentation to improve his health - something that has since become known as "biohacking".

He started by reading blogs and realized that other people’s advice didn’t work well for him. Most people were preaching what worked best for them, regardless of empirical evidence and with scientifically incorrect information.

Frustrated, he did his own research, reading scientific literature on PubMed, which gave rise to SelfHacked. Through his research, Joe found several topics that are rarely mentioned in chronic health issues, such as the vagus nerve, the cannabinoid system, the importance of sun exposure (beyond obtaining adequate vitamin D), and Th1, Th2, and Th17 dominance.

Our Process

SelfHacking starts with solid information, such as from peer-reviewed published studies (not from blogs or other experts) that is critically evaluated. This information, along with personal experience, helps guide the self-experimentation or SelfHacking.

In summary:

Solid information

(peer-reviewed scientific research)

critical evaluation

self experimentation

Sometimes, information about a practice or substance is not published in peer-reviewed studies.

This can be because it is not an attractive field to do research, or because it would be difficult to design the study. Sometimes, if the mechanism seems plausible and risks of harm aren’t too high, we keep an open mind and look for the science may support how these things benefit our health.

While Joe started off trying to improve his health, SelfHacking could also be used to further optimize health and performance for people who are already healthy.

Common Issues

Autoimmunity is when the body’s immune system becomes overactive and starts to attack healthy cells. It’s extremely common and can cause numerous conditions such as allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, hypothyroidism, and more! These diseases have a wide variety of symptoms but commonly, you might experience fatigue, brain fog, depression, gut issues, and chronic pain.

Brain Fog

Brain fog is a collection of symptoms such as forgetfulness, lack of mental clarity, confusion, and inability to focus. It’s not a clinical term and is also referred to as ‘mental fog,’ ‘clouding of consciousness,’ or ‘cognitive dysfunction.’ It is generally caused by inflammation in the brain, stemming from some underlying cause.

Thyroid Conditions

The thyroid is a very important organ that produces hormones. If you have an issue with your thyroid (hypo- or hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease), it will manifest in a wide variety of symptoms and issues (weight fluctuations, brain fog, fatigue, hair loss, anxiety, depression, constipation, and more)

Mood Disorders (Depression + Stress + Anxiety)

Lectin Sensitivity

Lectins (a protein found in plants considered an antinutrient) are one of the most significant sources of food sensitivity. Many people with autoimmunity (Th1, Th2, and Th17 dominance) react easily to some plant-based substances that can then overstimulate the immune system and cause inflammation (leading to fatigue, brain fog, IBS, anxiety, depression, OCD, acne, and more).

Weight Issues

A lot of people struggle with weight issues their whole lives. Although environmental factors play a large role, there is also a genetic basis to how we gain and lose weight and it can also influence how effective certain lifestyle changes are (diet and exercise).
